OMOTENASHI dining scene with Japanese tea

OMOTENASHI dining
scene with Japanese tea

Make your daily life more relaxed and filled with happiness. As our company has operated in Ochanomizu for more than 100 years, we wanted to contribute to the local community and opened RESTAURANT 1899 OCHANOMIZU featuring tea, which is also the origin of the name of Ochanomizu.

In order to convey the appeal of Japanese tea and the way to best enjoy it, we offer the “OMOTENASHI dining scene with Japanese tea” in 1899’s original style.

1899 provides new tea cuisine that uses tea leaves as an ingredient prepared with seasonal delicacies.
This unique experience is a perfect way to experience our hospitality.
The new taste at 1899 is a pleasantly surprising experience.

Meet the manager and executive chef

Masafumi Okubo

Our executive chef, born in Saitama Prefecture, is a graduate of the prestigious Musashino Culinary Institute.

He honed his skills at renowned Japanese restaurants specializing in fugu (blowfish) in Tokyo’s Roppongi, Ueno and Yaesu districts. Later, he joined Ryumeikan Co. and became the head chef at Hanagoyomi Tokyo in Chuo-ku, where he has been working since 2014.

In August of the same year, he took on the role of chef de cuisine at Restaurant 1899 Ochanomizu upon its opening. In 2016, he further enriched his culinary expertise by studying under renowned cookery researcher Mutsuko Tokunaga, focusing on tea cuisine.

A passionate advocate for creating a “dining scene of hospitality with Japanese tea,” he continues to reinvent Japanese cuisine, breaking away from the traditional notion of tea as just a beverage. When not in the kitchen, he brings a playful, mischievous spirit to his off-duty life.
